Duval courthouse costing 4 times more in utilities than old building

A nationally recognized green-building organization recently certified the new Duval County Courthouse as an environmentally sound, energy-conserving facility.
But the building, nearly 2½ times bigger than its predecessor, is costing the city four times as much to operate. That means millions of additional taxpayer dollars over a 12-month cycle.
The September utility bill from JEA came in at $358,480. That compares with $88,813 for the old courthouse in September 2011.
