Enrollment in the Duval County Public Schools is down about 1,600 from where it expected to be at this point of the new school year.
If it doesn't increase, the school system ultimately might lose $7 million in state funding.
The enrollment decrease is a surprise, Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals said this week, given the state had projected a 700-student increase for the district.
