Calling it a boon to the economies of both Jacksonville and the state, Gov. Rick Scott ceremoniously signed legislation Saturday designating Cecil Airport as a spaceport.
The legislation, passed by the Florida Legislature during the last session, prepares the way for commercial industry to set up space-related operations at the former military base on Jacksonville's Westside.
The Jacksonville Aviation Authority, which controls the airport, is in the midst of working on a Spaceport Master Plan, the first such plan in the country.
